Michael Rothman, PhD
Michael Rothman developed the Rothman Index with his brother Steven following the preventable death of their mother, Florence. As an FDA-cleared artificial intelligence (AI) predictive analytics system, the Rothman Index automatically extracts and analyzes constantly changing clinical measurements from the EMR, including complete head-to-toe nursing assessments. Its predictive analytic algorithms detect subtle changes over time that often go unnoticed, calculating an aggregated score of patient’s overall physiological condition.
Prior to this work on the Rothman Index, Michael spent 18 years at IBM, part of which was in the AI department at the TJ Watson Research Labs. Dr. Rothman is the author of research papers published in: BMJ Open, J of Biomedical Informatics, J of Critical Care, Critical Care Medicine, Hospital Pediatrics and J of Hospital Medicine, and has had six US and Canadian patents issued, based on healthcare-related modeling and machine learning algorithms.
In 2021, Rothman was inducted as a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). This prestigious peer-awarded achievement recognizes professionals who apply informatics skills and knowledge towards the goals of enhanced personal and population health, improved organizational performance and learning, and individual empowerment in their health, care, and research.
